# Separate a video subject from its background with a Claude Code skill, then edit scene by scene in an HTML review panel

Bart Slodyczka runs a free skill that has Claude Code download Meta's Segment Anything model, track a subject through every frame of a clip, and split it from the background so you can put text behind it, dim the background or pin a label to a moving object. He also shows an HTML page that lists each scene with a comment box for batch edits. It must run in Claude Code, not Cowork.

## What the skill does

The object-separation skill splits a video into two layers, the subject and the background, so you can darken the background without darkening the subject, put text behind the subject, or add motion graphics between the layers. The skill is a single file, published on his GitHub (linked in the video's first comment). It uses SAM, Meta's Segment Anything model: you point it at an object once, it finds the outline, and it follows that outline through every frame.

## Three things to know first

1. **Run it in Claude Code, not Claude Cowork.** His reasoning: Cowork runs in a separate virtual machine that cannot use your computer's graphics chip, and this skill downloads a small AI model and runs it locally on your real machine.
2. **The skill checks your hardware** (CPU, graphics chip, memory) and picks the matching model size, then downloads it. Bigger models trace the outline more accurately, but he found the small ones good enough. An Apple M-series chip or Nvidia GPU runs fast; an older laptop without a GPU still works, just slower.
3. **Work inside a project folder.** If you stay in an unattached session you lose the personalisation, and you can ask Claude to modify the imported skill to fit a process you like.

## The walkthrough

1. He uses the Claude desktop app, Claude Code, a blank project folder, and Opus 5.5 on medium effort (he says no model he has tried does this kind of motion work as well, GPT models included).
2. He pastes the skill and a 27-second unboxing clip and tells Claude that he already has the model downloaded, so it should scan for it rather than download again. Claude found SAM 2 on his machine and split the clip into 799 frames.
3. Tracking took about 10 minutes on his M5 Max with 48 GB of memory. Landscape 16:9 and vertical phone footage both work.
4. The result handled the switch from the box to the Mac mini cleanly, including fingers passing in front. There was some flicker he expected not to matter.

## The HTML review panel

He asks Claude to split the video into scenes (for the unboxing: tearing the box open, spinning the box, unwrapping plastic, spinning the Mac mini) and build an HTML page with each scene and a comment box next to it. He types an edit note per scene, then tells Claude in chat to apply all of them in one batch and re-render, instead of editing one clip at a time. Three edits from his notes: white text behind the box with a dimmed background, a tracked pin and label on the Mac mini's HDMI port while it rotates, and step captions that replace each other (plug in power, then plug in the HDMI cable).

## Gotchas & Caveats

- The skill itself is linked in a pinned comment, not in the transcript, so this page can't show its contents or exact install steps.
- His reason for avoiding Cowork (a virtual machine without access to the graphics chip) is his explanation; check Anthropic's documentation for how Cowork runs on your setup.
- He admits parts of the demo were imperfect: peeling the plastic confused the tracking in one section, and he did not need the separation for the caption edit.
- He launched a paid school community in the same video and says his full editing process is there; the video itself teaches the pieces above.
- His claim that Opus 5.5 beats other models at motion graphics is a personal comparison, not a benchmark.

## Key Takeaways

- Local segmentation means the skill needs your real machine, so choose Claude Code, not a sandboxed environment.
- Tell Claude about models you already downloaded so it does not fetch another copy.
- A per-scene comment panel turns many small edit requests into one batch.
- Combine skills: separate the subject first, then layer text or tracking effects.
