# Local AI on a new Mac from scratch: size the model to your RAM, serve it with LM Studio, point Hermes at it

Craig Hewitt sets up a local model on a new MacBook Pro (M5 Max, 64 GB) and connects it to the Hermes desktop app. The sequence is simple and reusable: work out what your memory can hold, download a quantized model in LM Studio, switch on its local server, and give Hermes the server address. The part the video leaves out is context length, and Hermes refuses to start a local model with too little of it.

## What the video shows

- **Size the model to memory first.** He says RAM and memory transfer speed decide how good a machine is at local models, not graphics memory alone. He uses a "can I run" site (linked in his description) that detects the computer and suggests models for coding, images and video.
- **Quantization.** A quantized build is a shrunk model that needs less memory. For Qwen 3.8 27B on his 64 GB machine he weighs a 4-bit build (about 14 to 16 GB) against Q5_K_M (about 17 GB) and takes LM Studio's 4-bit suggestion, a 16 GB download.
- **Two ways to serve a model.** Ollama is a terminal tool; LM Studio is a desktop app with its own chat window. He picks LM Studio because he prefers a graphical interface.
- **First run is slow.** The first message loads the whole download into memory. Activity Monitor shows about 16 to 17 GB in use and the fans spin up; he warns that older machines with weaker cooling will throttle.
- **Connect Hermes.** In LM Studio he turns on the local API server and copies its address. In the Hermes desktop app he adds a custom endpoint named "LM Studio", pastes the URL, leaves API mode on "detect", and sets the default model to the model name. The new endpoint then appears in Hermes's model picker.
- **Which harness.** His rule of thumb: for something you sit and talk to, a terminal harness such as OpenCode is enough; for something that should run all day without you, use an autonomous one such as Hermes or OpenClaw.

## Checked against the Hermes docs

These points come from the [Hermes AI Providers page](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/integrations/providers). They differ from the video in two places that matter.

- **Context length is required.** The docs say Hermes needs at least 64,000 tokens of context for agent use and rejects smaller windows at startup. In LM Studio, set the context length to at least 64000 from the model's gear icon and reload the model, or load it from the command line with `lms load --context-length 64000`. `--estimate-only` checks whether it fits first. The video never mentions this, so a model that loads fine in chat can still fail when Hermes connects.
- **There is a built-in LM Studio provider.** From a terminal, run `hermes model`, choose "LM Studio", and accept `http://localhost:1234/v1` (1234 is LM Studio's default port). Start the server from the app's Developer tab or with `lms server start`. Enter `LM_API_KEY` only if you turned on server authentication. The docs list LM Studio 0.3.6 or later as the minimum for tool calling.
- **Ollama instead.** Run `hermes model`, choose "Custom endpoint (self-hosted / VLLM / etc.)", enter `http://localhost:11434/v1`, skip the API key and give the model name. Ollama's default window can be too small, so start it with `OLLAMA_CONTEXT_LENGTH=64000 ollama serve` and confirm with `ollama ps`.
- **Config file form.** A custom endpoint is a `model:` block in `~/.hermes/config.yaml` with `provider: custom`, a `base_url`, a `default` model name and an optional `context_length`.

## Gotchas & Caveats

- The model name, memory figures and speed are the presenter's own on one machine. Another Mac or a smaller model will differ; use the quantization table for your own memory.
- He describes the setup in the Hermes desktop app. We could not confirm the exact field labels there from the docs, which describe the terminal route; the idea is the same.
- "Free" covers the software and the tokens. A machine that runs a 27B model is a large purchase, as he says himself.

## Key Takeaways

- Choose the quantization from your memory, not from the model's headline size.
- Set the context window to 64,000 or more before connecting Hermes, or it will refuse the model.
- LM Studio's server on port 1234 and Ollama's on 11434 are both reachable from Hermes as local endpoints.
