A hands-on comparison of Moonshot's new Kimi K3.1 Pro against Opus 5.5 on eight build tasks, each model in its own harness at max effort. It also shows what the Kimi app offers beyond a chat box.

Source video

"I Tested China's New Model vs Claude Opus 5.5 (Kimi K3.1)" by **Nick Saraev** — [Watch on YouTube →](https://youtube.com/watch?v=OBzWl3Bw1JY) Benchmark scores are read from Kimi's own homepage in the video, and the speaker ran both models on subscription plans, not the API.

## How the test was run

- Identical prompt and tools for both models, each in its own harness: Kimi K3.1 in Kimi Code, Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, both at max effort.
- Average build time: **29 minutes 41 seconds for Kimi against 47 minutes 2 seconds for Opus 5.5**.
- Eight demos: a 3D mechanical-keyboard configurator, a two-galaxy collision simulation (about 200,000 stars), a scroll-driven landing page in pure SVG and HTML with no outside assets, a tower-demolition simulation, a Minecraft-style game, and a reproduction of a game the speaker had built.

## Results, in the speaker's words and order

- **Keyboard:** Kimi's worked, including colour and switch pickers and typing. Opus's did not load at first, and needed a fix message, then looked a little more realistic with slightly better key geometry.
- **Galaxies:** functionally the same; Opus's looked more like space, which he calls taste rather than quality.
- **Scroll landing page:** Opus went further (a live shark, a 3D effect) but the page was noticeably slower.
- **Tower demolition:** both ran; Opus placed the tower in a city and had better animation but irritating sound, while Kimi's was bare.
- **Minecraft-style game:** Kimi's was playable with good shading; in Opus's version the character could not move.
- **Reproduced game:** Opus's was much better; Kimi's had inverted up and down controls.
- **Overall:** Opus 5.5 is better at many things, but Kimi was more consistent. Opus failed to work twice across the eight demos, which the speaker puts down to not testing its own work at the end.

## Numbers stated in the video

- **Price:** $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens for Kimi K3.1 Pro, with Opus 5.5 described as double the cost. (Opus 5.5's list price on our model data is $4 / $20, which fits that ratio. Moonshot's price page was not checked.)
- **Benchmarks from Kimi's homepage:** Terminal Bench 4.0 at 65.7 against GPT-6 Astra at 58.2; Kimi Code Bench 3.0 long-horizon 61.2 against Opus 5.5 at 58.5; Humanity's Last Exam 70 against Opus 5.5 at 67.7. These are vendor-published and not independently run.
- **Plans:** both models ran on subscription plans, and he describes Kimi's plan allowance as generous.

## Reproduce the comparison

1. Pick a set of build prompts (the speaker used eight, from a keyboard configurator to a game) and give both models the identical prompt and tools.
2. Run each in its own harness at max effort: Kimi K3.1 Pro in Kimi Code and Opus 5.5 in Claude Code. Put the output of each on a landing page so you can compare side by side.
3. Record the build time for every task and the average (29m41s against 47m2s here).
4. Open every output and test it: does it load, does the character move, do the controls work. Opus's two failures came from output that was never tested.
5. Compare list price per million tokens against how often you would have to re-run the cheaper model.

## The Kimi app

- An "ask anything or task an agent" box, with add files and images, plugins, skills and a model and effort selector (the demo used Kimi K3.1 Pro High).
- **Swarm:** a Kimi-specific mode that delegates to many agents at once. He asked for 10 independent landing pages for fake products and it asked a clarifying question through a panel before starting.
- The reasoning trace is much shorter than a Claude or OpenAI one; he attributes this to compute-efficient reasoning, which is his interpretation.

## Caveats

- Eight one-off demos, scored by one person and not systematically; the speaker said he had not scored them when he started.
- Opus 5.5 at max effort is not the setting Anthropic suggests as a default; see our effort-level page.
- **Another creator's test disagrees on speed.** [Our page on a five-build test](https://openclawdatabase.com/news/videos/2026-10-26-kimi-k3-1-pro-vs-claude-opus-5-5-five-builds-time-tokens-cost/) found Opus faster and better with Kimi cheaper, and it separates what is and is not confirmed about K3.1 Pro. Build time here depended on prompts, harness and plan limits.
